Credit Repair — Tips and Advice

The first step in credit repair is to obtain a copy of your credit report from the top three bureaus — Experian, Equiax, and TransUnion. Creditors are not required to report to all three bureaus, but only to the one in which they subscribe. Obtaining a copy of your credit report from these three credit bureaus is the first, and a very important step, in any type of credit repair.

Once you have a copies of your credit report, in order to continue with credit repair, you will need to evaluate the copies carefully. Determine which negative marks are legit, and which are inaccurate. To repair marks that are legit, you will need to reassess payment arrangements you may have previously made with the creditor. It may take a period of time of making payments on time to improve this negative mark, but making the timely payments will eventually improve it. If the negative marks are inaccurate, you will need object to it by completing a dispute form. All three major credit bureaus will investigate all disputes within 30 days of receiving them.

In addition, there is more to credit repair than improving legit negative marks from your credit report, as well as disputing inaccurate marks. One of the most important steps in credit repair is to learn to budget your money. This may include canceling lines of credit that cause you to live above your means. If it becomes necessary to cancel any of your credit accounts, consider closing the newer ones, as opposed to creditors that show a history of credit. More so, remember to tell the creditor to list the account as “closed by customer request”. This will show potential creditors the account was closed by you, as opposed to being closed for problems with repayment. To help you with credit repair, you should only keep the lines of credit you are comfortably able to repay. Close all others. Additional things you can do to aid in your credit repair can include:

· open a savings account with your local bank

· obtain a “secured” line of credit

· pay your monthly bills in a timely fashion
